Crevacol Italy
Crevacol, north of Aosta, Italy is a Rebel Alliance secret stash with a feature unique in the world of snowboarding – a return ‘trail’ via the roof of an elevated major roadway. The Crevacol base area is hemmed in by a bend in the Gran San Bernardo Pass road to Switzerland and Verbier which delivers unsurpassed return access from a powder laden backcountry that we are sure could not have been further from the minds of the engineers that built it. Snowboarding in Crévacol reminds you that bigger is not necessarily better. On a powder day, you will love it. On any other day, you will probably love it too!
The Terrain
Crevacol’s ample riding vertical of 800m is more than adequately served by the two well positioned chairlifts. From the top, the options are many. In-bounds pistes are fun, rolling runs that are as fast or slow as one desires. Pistes wind through trees in the mid area. One marked advanced piste out wide to riders’ right highlights skinning and backcountry options as well as being a joy in its own right. All the runs to the base go under the elevated roadway – a surreal experience. It can be difficult stopping yourself from ducking your head!
Off-piste, freeride and backcountry snowboard options are excellent from the top lift station. Untouched bowls, safe ridges and light larch forest to the north and east of the resort all end with a return via the roof of the elevated roadway – a unique experience in the world of snowboarding. A bit of a push, but who cares. Note that we imagine going onto the roadway is probably not strictly allowed, but as they say, when in Rome…..
The History
Back in 1984 there were big plans for Crevacol. It was going to be the next big thing in resorts. Plans were in place for a huge resort made of 10 major lifts including cable cars. Development (thankfully!) stopped at two chairlifts and so as well as pondering what might have been, we are left with a great little resort with just enough lift access to open up a huge amount of terrain possibilities. It’s a bit like an Italian St Foy.
What you get?
As on all of our snowboard off piste courses we always try top find the best conditions possible with the least amount of effort but if walking is necessary then we will definitely be earning our turns. Equally if conditions aren’t perfect for free ride and as part of the Aosta Valley, several other resorts are an easy day trip from our base in the town of Aosta including Pila and further afield to wonderful La Thuile and Cormayeur. Making the area a perfect ‘snowboard safari’ location. The course includes shared accommodation in the Duca d’Aosta hotel, breakfast, all transfers to and from Milan airport and to other resorts, lift passes and of course guiding and coaching.
